As the world gathers in the New York–New Jersey region for the historic FIFA World Cup 2026™, Newark takes center stage with Savor Newark 2026: The Culinary Cup — United at the Table Symposium.
As the City of Newark’s official kickoff to the World Cup celebrations, this FREE one-day international culinary event brings together chefs, restaurateurs, and cultural leaders to showcase Newark’s dynamic food scene—shaped by generations of immigrant communities.
Newark’s cuisine is a living expression of the people who call the city home, where each culture contributes distinct traditions and flavors to create an authentic and richly diverse dining experience.
From the Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish influences of the Ironbound District to the vibrant African, Caribbean, and South American cuisines found throughout the city, Newark stands proudly as America’s Authentic Food Capital.
More than a food event, Savor Newark 2026 is a global culinary experience that celebrates culture, innovation, unity, and identity through the universal language of food. In recognition of its impact, it has been named #5 in “26 Reasons to Visit New Jersey in 2026” by VisitNJ.

Nelson Soares is a visionary, self-taught Brazilian chef and dynamic culinary entrepreneur redefining modern Italian-Brazilian fusion cuisine through a bold, cross-cultural lens.
He first rose to international prominence with Sult, founded in 2019 in Botafogo, Rio de Janeiro masterfully blending classical Italian technique with vibrant Brazilian flavors. Under his leadership, Sult earned a coveted Bib Gourmand distinction from the Michelin Guide, was featured on the prestigious 50 Best Discovery list, and recognized by the Louis Vuitton City Guide.
In 2024, he expanded to Portugal with Sult Cascais, elevating regional seafood and seasonal products with refined precision. In 2025, he launched B-Life Kitchen, a forward-thinking concept dedicated to clean, health-driven cuisine without sacrificing depth or flavor.
At the heart of Chef Nelson's work is a philosophy of balance, intensity, and simplicity honoring culinary heritage while pushing boundaries and shaping the future of contemporary dining.
Chef Soares’ participation will include a live cooking demonstration during the Savor Newark event, highlighting sustainability and nutrition-forward techniques that reflect the future of global cuisine. His consulting portfolio spans all segments of the foodservice industry, including start-ups, quick-service operations, full-service restaurants, bistros, and cafés. He has provided strategic guidance and operational oversight for a wide range of notable clients, including nine U.S. Navy foodservice facilities, Sylvia’s “Queen of Soul Food”, Sweet T’s Southern Eatery, BLVD Bistro, and Harlem Hops. Through advanced cost-control systems and performance optimization, his work has generated over $20 million in increased net operating income across client operations.
In addition to his consulting work, Wallace is a dedicated educator and mentor. As an Adjunct Professor, he has taught at the New York Restaurant School, The Art Institute, Hudson County College, and Westchester County College, shaping the next generation of culinary and hospitality professionals. Prior to her current role, Mays held senior leadership positions at some of the most prominent real estate organizations in the New York metropolitan area. She served as Senior Vice President and Head of Leasing at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Managing Director of Commercial Leasing at The Durst Organization, and Vice President of Leasing at SL Green Realty Corp. Across these roles, she was instrumental in leasing strategy, tenant curation, and the activation of major commercial spaces.
Mays also previously served as Chief Real Estate and Marketing Officer at the Newark Alliance, where she played a key role in advancing development initiatives and attracting investment to the city, including the revitalization of key corridors such as Halsey Street.

As Chief Sustainability Officer, Hewitt-Cabral brings more than two decades of experience in environmental sustainability, community resilience, and public engagement. With a career spanning local, national, and international initiatives, she has dedicated herself to advancing equitable, community-driven solutions to complex environmental and social challenges.
Ms. Hewitt-Cabral began her career in public service with an internship at the White House’s President’s Council on Sustainable Development in 1999, followed by work with the United Nations Development Programme in 2005, where she contributed to the Equator Initiative and the United Nations Capital Development Fund. She also served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia from 2000 to 2002, working as a Natural Resources Management Extensionist and later as a Gender and Development Representative. In these roles, she led community-based agroforestry and soil conservation initiatives, supporting women farmers and promoting sustainable land use practices.
After earning her Master of Public Administration from New York University, Ms. Hewitt-Cabral served as a Program Officer with the Institute for Sustainable Communities from 2007 to 2010. There, she played a key role in supporting Gulf Coast communities rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, including helping to develop and manage the Sustainable Communities Network, which connected and supported regional leaders in long-term recovery efforts.
From 2014 to 2023, she worked at Public Agenda, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit, where she advanced from Senior Public Engagement Associate to Director of Public Engagement. In this capacity, she led innovative initiatives such as Cycles of Resilience, a New York City-focused effort that empowered residents in neighborhoods impacted by Superstorm Sandy to participate in climate justice and resiliency planning.
In December 2022, Ms. Hewitt-Cabral founded Community Action Strategies, LLC, a Newark-based consulting firm focused on community-building and stakeholder engagement. As Founder and CEO, she partnered with organizations including the City University of New York (CUNY), Canarsie Community Development Inc., and the City of Newark to design and implement impactful, community-centered projects.

In this capacity, she led innovative initiatives such as Cycles of Resilience, a New York City-focused effort that empowered residents in neighborhoods impacted by Superstorm Sandy to participate in climate justice and resiliency planning.
In December 2022, Ms. Hewitt-Cabral founded Community Action Strategies, LLC, a Newark-based consulting firm focused on community-building and stakeholder engagement. As Founder and CEO, she partnered with organizations including the City University of New York (CUNY), Canarsie Community Development Inc., and the City of Newark to design and implement impactful, community-centered projects.
Ms. Hewitt-Cabral holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Science & Policy from Hood College and a Master of Public Administration from New York University, with a specialization in International Public and Nonprofit Policy and Management.

Deputy Mayor & Director of Economic & Housing Development
Allison Ladd spearheads Newark’s housing and economic development efforts, advancing Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s equitable growth strategy. Her work focuses on leveraging billions of dollars in new investment to create inclusive opportunities for residents and businesses, ensuring that Newark’s growth benefits the entire community.
Ms. Ladd joined the City of Newark after serving as Deputy Director of the Washington, D.C. Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD). She assumed her role with a commitment to fostering a culture of participation and inclusion—one that prioritizes equitable opportunity, shared prosperity, and sustainable growth, rather than displacement and gentrification. Under her leadership, Newark has made significant strides in realizing this vision.
In Newark, Ms. Ladd has led the development of innovative policies, programs, and financing tools to preserve and expand affordable housing, prevent foreclosures and evictions, support first-time homeownership, and transform abandoned properties into community assets. She has also advanced mixed-income housing through inclusionary zoning. In addition, she oversees the City’s Equitable Growth Commission and serves as Board Chair of Invest Newark (formerly the Newark Community Economic Development Corporation), a quasi-governmental organization dedicated to strengthening small businesses, implementing the city’s land bank, and operating one of the nation’s fastest broadband fiber networks.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Ladd directed her department’s efforts to mitigate the economic impact on Newark’s most vulnerable residents and small businesses by developing targeted relief programs.
Prior to her work in Newark, Ms. Ladd held several senior leadership roles in housing and community development. As Deputy Director of Washington, D.C.’s DHCD, she managed a 180-person agency with an annual budget exceeding $300 million and oversaw the financing of real estate development projects totaling more than $830 million. Her leadership contributed to transforming the agency into an award-winning organization. She also played a key role in preserving affordable housing to help long-term residents remain in a high-cost city.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Ladd served as Associate Executive Director of the District of Columbia Housing Finance Agency; Chief of Staff at the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development; Director of the Maryland Governor’s Housing Policy Commission; and Special Assistant to the Director in Prince George’s County (MD) Department of Housing and Community Development.
Ms. Ladd holds a Master’s degree in Community Planning from the University of Maryland, College Park, and a Bachelor of Arts in Urban Studies from the University of Rhode Island. She is a Korean American from New England who enjoys cooking and traveling.

Since 2004, Vivian Cox Fraser has led the Urban League of Essex County (ULEC), driving its growth and transformation from a traditional social services agency into a comprehensive community development corporation. Under her leadership, ULEC has become highly responsive to the needs identified by Essex County residents—particularly in expanding educational access and creating opportunities for young people.
Prior to joining ULEC, Ms. Fraser built a distinguished career at major institutions including Prudential, Credit Suisse, and CIGNA. In these roles, she developed a strategic, outcomes-driven approach to strengthening the systems that shape family stability and student success.
During her tenure at ULEC, Ms. Fraser has significantly expanded and integrated services that promote both educational and economic mobility. Her leadership has led to the establishment of the Financial Opportunity Center, the development of a job-creating social enterprise, advancements in affordable housing initiatives, and stronger community organizing efforts that connect residents to critical resources and opportunities.

Emilio Panasci is the Founder and Executive Director of the Urban Agriculture Cooperative (UAC), where he leads program staff, oversees development and fundraising efforts, and cultivates strategic partnerships with allied organizations and businesses. With more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit community development and 15 years working in urban food systems, he brings deep expertise and a collaborative approach to advancing equitable, community-based solutions.
In his role, Emilio represents UAC on state and regional committees, including the New Jersey Food Democracy Collaborative, as well as several Essex County and City of Newark community groups. His work focuses on strengthening local food systems, expanding access to healthy food, and supporting sustainable neighborhood development.
Emilio holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Rutgers College Honors Program and a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from the Rutgers Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, where he focused on community development organizations.
He is passionate about urban environmentalism, community development, and healthy, sustainable living practices, with a strong commitment to building integrated, thriving neighborhoods. Emilio grew up primarily in Maplewood, New Jersey, and has been a resident of Newark for the past decade.

The Cherry Blossom Welcome Center is located inside Branch Brook Park in Newark. It’s the hub for discovering the park’s famous cherry trees and information during the bloom season (typically early-mid April).
