As the City of Newark’s official kickoff to the World Cup celebrations, this FREE one-day international culinary event brings together chefs, restaurateurs, and cultural leaders to showcase Newark’s dynamic food scene—shaped by generations of immigrant communities.
Newark’s cuisine is a living expression of the people who call the city home, where each culture contributes distinct traditions and flavors to create an authentic and richly diverse dining experience.
From the Portuguese, Brazilian, and Spanish influences of the Ironbound District to the vibrant African, Caribbean, and South American cuisines found throughout the city, Newark stands proudly as America’s Authentic Food Capital.
More than a food event, Savor Newark 2026 is a global culinary experience that celebrates culture, innovation, unity, and identity through the universal language of food. In recognition of its impact, it has been named #5 in “26 Reasons to Visit New Jersey in 2026” by VisitNJ.

Chef Soares’ participation will include a live cooking demonstration during the Savor Newark event, highlighting sustainability and nutrition-forward techniques that reflect the future of global cuisine. Mayor

With a strong foundation in project coordination and operations, Chanice brings over a decade of experience in managing complex projects, streamlining processes, and driving team efficiency. She has served as a Senior Project Coordinator at TRC Companies, Inc. since 2015, where she has developed a reputation for her proactive cross-functional communication, attention to detail, and ability to deliver projects on time and within budget. Inspired by his upbringing in a family devoted to food, Angel’s culinary journey traces back to Muros, a coastal fishing town in Galicia, Spain. His father, a chef aboard a prestigious fishing vessel, instilled in him a respect for fresh ingredients and creativity, while his mother’s passion for baking continues to influence the homemade desserts served at Casa d’Paco today. Together, their influence shaped Angel’s vision of creating a restaurant that feels like home—rich in tradition, warmth, and authenticity.
Angel graduated from Rutgers University–Newark with a degree in Finance and Management, and initially pursued a career in the corporate world. After graduating from Berkeley College, Jaime built his career in commercial and private banking with JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Valley Bank. He then transitioned into the public sector, serving as Director of Operations at Hudson County Community College and in management roles at Bergen Community College, where he led initiatives focused on financial performance, growth, and operational efficiency.

As Chief Sustainability Officer, Hewitt-Cabral brings more than two decades of experience in environmental sustainability, community resilience, and public engagement. With a career spanning local, national, and international initiatives, she has dedicated herself to advancing equitable, community-driven solutions to complex environmental and social challenges.
Ms. Hewitt-Cabral began her career in public service with an internship at the White House’s President’s Council on Sustainable Development in 1999, followed by work with the United Nations Development Programme in 2005, where she contributed to the Equator Initiative and the United Nations Capital Development Fund. She also served in the U.S. Peace Corps in Bolivia from 2000 to 2002, working as a Natural Resources Management Extensionist and later as a Gender and Development Representative. In these roles, she led community-based agroforestry and soil conservation initiatives, supporting women farmers and promoting sustainable land use practices.
After earning her Master of Public Administration from New York University, Ms. Hewitt-Cabral served as a Program Officer with the Institute for Sustainable Communities from 2007 to 2010. There, she played a key role in supporting Gulf Coast communities rebuilding after Hurricane Katrina, including helping to develop and manage the Sustainable Communities Network, which connected and supported regional leaders in long-term recovery efforts.
From 2014 to 2023, she worked at Public Agenda, a Brooklyn-based nonprofit, where she advanced from Senior Public Engagement Associate to Director of Public Engagement. In this capacity, she led innovative initiatives such as Cycles of Resilience, a New York City-focused effort that empowered residents in neighborhoods impacted by Superstorm Sandy to participate in climate justice and resiliency planning.
In December 2022, Ms. Hewitt-Cabral founded Community Action Strategies, LLC, a Newark-based consulting firm focused on community-building and stakeholder engagement. Founder & Executive Director
Emilio Panasci is the Founder and Executive Director of the Urban Agriculture Cooperative (UAC), where he leads program staff, oversees development and fundraising efforts, and cultivates strategic partnerships with allied organizations and businesses. With more than 20 years of experience in nonprofit community development and 15 years working in urban food systems, he brings deep expertise and a collaborative approach to advancing equitable, community-based solutions.
In his role, Emilio represents UAC on state and regional committees, including the New Jersey Food Democracy Collaborative, as well as several Essex County and City of Newark community groups. His work focuses on strengthening local food systems, expanding access to healthy food, and supporting sustainable neighborhood development.
Emilio holds a Bachelor’s degree from the Rutgers College Honors Program and a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning from the Rutgers Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy, where he focused on community development organizations.
He is passionate about urban environmentalism, community development, and healthy, sustainable living practices, with a strong commitment to building integrated, thriving neighborhoods. Emilio grew up primarily in Maplewood, New Jersey, and has been a resident of Newark for the past decade.

Hank Zona is a Maplewood-based food and wine-focused event planner, writer, and speaker with a passion for storytelling through culinary experiences. His work has appeared in Edible Jersey, Jersey’s Best, New Jersey Monthly, Food52, WSJ Off-Duty Travel, Travel + Leisure, and SWURL.
A graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial and Labor Relations (ILR), Hank has written extensively about Newark and collaborated with many of the city’s businesses and organizations. More importantly, he has been a dedicated visitor and patron of Newark for more than three decades, celebrating the people, flavors, and communities that make the city unique.
Owner & Executive Chef
Executive Chef Nelson Soares Nelson Soares is a self-taught chef and the creative force behind Sult Rio de Janeiro and Sult Cascais, where his passion for gastronomy and wine defines his culinary vision. Originally from Brazil, he founded Sult in Rio de Janeiro, where the restaurant quickly gained recognition for its refined interpretation of Italian cuisine with a contemporary, transalpine influence.
In Brazil, Sult received significant acclaim, earning the prestigious Bib Gourmand, being featured on the 50 Best Discovery list, and included in the Louis Vuitton City Guide. These distinctions established Chef Nelson as a distinctive voice in the culinary scene, known for his creative, author-driven cuisine and commitment to high-quality ingredients.
Following this success, Chef Nelson expanded Sult to Portugal, opening Sult Cascais in the heart of the coastal town. There, he continues to evolve his concept by blending Italian culinary traditions with exceptional Portuguese products—particularly seafood—while maintaining the innovative and elegant style that defines his work. In 2026, Sult Cascais was also awarded the prestigious Bib Gourmand, making Chef Nelson one of the few chefs in the world to earn this distinction for the same concept across two continents.
Before fully dedicating himself to the culinary world, Chef Nelson spent 25 years leading a biotechnology company, bringing a unique perspective, precision, and discipline to his approach in the kitchen.

Chef/Teacher
Chef John Calache is a seasoned culinary professional and dedicated educator with more than two decades of experience in the kitchen. A proud graduate of Hudson County Community College (A.S.) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (B.S., M.S.), he built a strong foundation in both culinary arts and leadership.
Chef Calache refined his craft as Executive Sous Chef at Verizon’s World Headquarters, where he operated in a high-level, fast-paced culinary environment. He later followed his true passion for teaching—what began as a leap of faith quickly became the most fulfilling chapter of his career.
Known for his engaging and approachable style, Chef Calache brings a unique blend of humor, real-world experience, and genuine enthusiasm to every classroom. He goes beyond teaching recipes, inspiring students to discover their own culinary voice while preparing them for the challenges and opportunities within the industry.
Outside the kitchen, Chef Calache enjoys spending time with his family and reflecting on his culinary journey. Inspired by the belief that “anyone can cook”—even under pressure—he is committed to creating meaningful, hands-on experiences that empower the next generation of chefs. Through his work with Newark Chops, he continues to serve as a guiding force, helping young culinary talent rise with confidence and creativity.

Director
Cláudia Silva Mataloto holds a Master’s degree in Food Design and a Bachelor’s degree in Food Production for the Restaurant Industry from the Estoril Higher Institute for Hospitality and Tourism. She also holds a degree in Public Relations and a postgraduate qualification in Marketing Communication.
Since 2006, she has been working with the Municipality of Cascais, where she has led communications in the areas of Environment and Entrepreneurship at the municipal environmental company, and later in internal communications at Cascais City Council. She is currently the coordinator of the gastronomic area, overseeing initiatives such as the Cascais Food Lab—a space located in Mercado da Vila dedicated to promoting local and international gastronomy—and the social entrepreneurship project “Pão com Coração,” both finalists in national awards.
She is a member of the DIAITA research network – Food Heritage of the Lusophone World at the University of Coimbra, the Research, Development and Innovation Center in Tourism.

Brandon Ureña is a passionate and dedicated culinary student with strong leadership skills and hands-on kitchen experience. As the Lead Sous Chef for Newark Vocational High School’s Breakfast Club, he plays an important role in leading daily food preparation, organizing kitchen operations, and collaborating with his team to serve breakfast to students each morning. Through this experience, Brandon has strengthened his leadership, communication, teamwork, and ability to perform under pressure in fast-paced environments.
For Brandon, cooking is more than preparing food — it is a creative outlet and a way to bring people together through meaningful experiences. He takes pride in his strong work ethic, attention to detail, and commitment to continuously learning and growing within the culinary industry.
Outside of the kitchen, Brandon enjoys playing volleyball and basketball, as well as spending time with family and friends, experiences that continue to shape his leadership skills and passion for community.

The Cherry Blossom Welcome Center is located inside Branch Brook Park in Newark. It’s the hub for discovering the park’s famous cherry trees and information during the bloom season (typically early-mid April).
NJ Transit:
Newark Broad Street Station (on the Montclair-Boonton and Morris & Essex lines) is the closest major rail stop. From there it’s about a 15–20 min walk or short rideshare/ride to the park entrance.
Newark Penn Station also connects you via NJ Transit and PATH trains; from there you can transfer or take a local bus/taxi/rideshare toward Branch Brook Park.
